Your Guide to Cyber Security

Picture Cyber security as a superhero watching over our digital world, protecting us from different types of attacks. These attacks can be like annoying computer bugs or really tricky ransomware that locks up important information. Cyber Security is like a shield protecting our digital world from bad guys trying to harm our computers, steal our information, or mess with our money. It’s like armour that keeps our systems, data, and money safe from sneaky attacks.

The danger from these cyberattacks is bigger than ever before. Just in 2023, the average cost of fixing a cyber breach jumped to a huge USD 4.45 million, which is 15 percent higher than before. Ransomware attacks were even more expensive, costing around USD 5.13 million on average. Plus, people had to pay an extra USD 1.5 million on top of that — almost double from the year before!

Technology has changed a lot and brought us great things, but it has also made it easier for people to do bad things online. Things like using cloud computing, complex networks, working from far away, and having lots of devices connected together have given bad guys more ways to cause trouble.

The people trying to protect us from these bad guys don’t have enough help. There’s a shortage of about 3.4 million Cyber Security experts worldwide. So, the teams that keep us safe online don’t have enough people, and they need really good plans to fight against these problems. They use fancy computer programs, smart robots, and special tricks to fight against these online threats and lessen the damage they cause.

Steps to Cyber Security

Let’s look at different areas of Cyber Security, each one helping to stop specific problems:

  • Critical Infrastructure Security: Keeps important systems safe for our country’s safety. Things like the NIST framework and advice from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security help with this.
  • Network Security: Protects our networks from bad guys and makes sure only the right people can use them.
  • Endpoint Security: Keeps our devices — like computers and phones — safe from attacks.
  • Application Security: Makes sure apps we use are safe and can’t be used to break into our networks.
  • Cloud Security: Keeps our information safe when it’s stored or used in the cloud, with both the provider and user sharing the responsibility.
  • Information Security: Protects all kinds of important information, digital or physical, from being accessed or changed by unauthorized people.
  • Mobile Security: Helps make smartphones and other mobile devices safe to use.

Knowing about the threats we face online is really important:

  • Malware: Bad software used in most cyberattacks.
  • Ransomware: Holds information or systems hostage until money is paid, with newer versions threatening to expose or do more damage.
  • Phishing: Tricky messages that try to make people give away important information or download harmful software.
  • Insider Threats: Problems caused by people who are supposed to have access but use it in the wrong way, either on purpose or by accident.
  • DDoS Attacks: Floods servers or networks with traffic to make them crash.

It’s also important to know that some things people believe about online safety aren’t entirely true. For example, just having a strong password isn’t always enough to stay safe. Bad guys are always finding new ways to cause trouble, so the risk of having problems online keeps growing.

To make our defenses stronger, we need to educate people about online safety, protect our networks and apps, make sure leaders care about this, and manage passwords properly. It’s like keeping an eye on risks and making plans to stay safe.

Cyber Security isn’t just about computers — it’s a big deal for businesses too. It helps them avoid losing money, having a bad reputation, and facing the serious problems that come from cybercrime. By understanding its importance and doing the right things, we make our online world safer and stronger for everyone.
